GST on home support services isn't a single fixed rule. It depends on the support worker's GST-registration status, the service being provided, and your funding source. CareVicinity works out the applicable GST treatment for you within the platform, so it isn't something you or your family need to calculate. GST is also a separate detail from CareVicinity's platform fee, which is a different line on your invoice entirely.
If you've looked closely at two different CareVicinity invoices, you may have noticed the GST treatment isn't identical. That's expected, not an error. GST on in-home support invoices varies because it depends on more than one factor at once, not a flat percentage applied to every shift.
This can feel confusing if you're used to invoices where tax is simply a fixed add-on. With independent support workers, it isn't, because the workers themselves aren't a single uniform category from a tax perspective.
Three things affect the GST treatment on a given invoice:
The support worker's GST-registration status. Some independent support workers are registered for GST and some aren't, depending on their own business circumstances.
The service being provided. The type of support delivered can affect how GST applies.
Your funding source. Whether you're funded through Support at Home, DVA, or paying privately can also be a factor.
CareVicinity identifies the applicable GST treatment within the platform, not the care seeker. That's a deliberate design choice: it removes a genuinely fiddly piece of tax logic from the reader's side of the transaction.
You don't need to work out GST yourself, check a support worker's ABN registration status, or apply a rate manually. CareVicinity handles this as part of processing your invoice, using the factors above. Your role is to review the invoice, not to derive the figures on it.
If you're used to arranging services where you're responsible for chasing down tax detail yourself, this is one area where that admin has already been done for you.
Your CareVicinity invoice will reflect the GST treatment that applies to that specific shift or service, based on the worker, the service, and your funding arrangement at the time. Because those three factors can differ between one booking and the next, even with the same support worker, the GST detail on your invoice can look slightly different from one invoice to another. This is the same underlying variation described above, not a separate issue.
It's worth being clear about this, because the two are easy to conflate. GST is a tax detail tied to the support worker's registration status, the service, and your funding source. It's separate from CareVicinity's platform fee. Care seekers pay no platform fee. CareVicinity's 12.5% platform fee applies to the support worker. GST doesn't change that: it's a different line on the invoice with a different explanation, not an extra cost layered on top of the platform fee.
If you want the full explanation of how the platform fee works, our pricing page covers that in detail. This article focuses on GST specifically.
Does GST change from shift to shift or month to month, even with the same support worker? It can. Because GST treatment depends on the support worker's GST-registration status, the service provided, and your funding source, a change in any of those between bookings, for example a worker's registration status changing, can mean the GST detail on your invoice looks different from a previous one, even for otherwise similar support.
Is GST treated differently depending on whether I'm funded through Support at Home, DVA, or paying privately? Funding source is one of the three factors that affects GST treatment, alongside the support worker's registration status and the service being provided. CareVicinity applies the correct treatment for your specific arrangement, whichever of the three funding pathways applies to you.
What should I do if something on my invoice doesn't look right? Get in touch through the platform so it can be checked against your specific booking. This article explains what generally determines GST treatment; your actual invoice, and CareVicinity's records for that booking, are the right place to resolve a specific question.
Is this article giving me tax advice? No. This explains how GST treatment is determined on CareVicinity invoices and why it isn't the same for every booking. It isn't personal tax advice. For questions about your own tax position, the Australian Taxation Office is the right source.
